Hospice of Michigan to Hold Volunteer Training Workshop in May

Fremont, Michigan, March 19, 2015 – Hospice of Michigan will hold a volunteer training workshop on Friday, May 1 in Fremont.

New volunteers are asked to go through a training course where they learn more about HOM, the principles of hospice, the grieving process and how to help patients, families and staff. The session will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The session will take place at the HOM Fremont office, 33 W. Main St. Advance registration is required.

Hospice of Michigan is looking for volunteers to provide patient care and companionship, grief support, office and administrative services and community outreach support to clients and families in Newaygo County.

“Our volunteers make a real difference in the lives of our patients,” said Deb Davis, volunteer coordinator. “In just a couple of hours, by making a cup of tea or reading the newspaper, volunteers can provide a sense of normalcy to hospice patients. This short time also gives caregivers a brief – but valuable – respite.

“We deeply appreciate our volunteers, who all have a passion for helping others. Some come with a specific skill to share, while others simply have the time and willingness to make a difference in the lives of patients and their families.”

Interested parties should visit https://www.hom.org/get-involved/getting-started/ to learn more and apply. For more information and to register after submitting an application, please contact Davis at 231.924.4249 or via ddavis@hom.org.

For those who have experienced a loss, HOM encourages a waiting period of one year before becoming a volunteer in order to allow for the processing of grief.
